Tesla dominates European EV sales with help from Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg

2023-03-18

The electric vehicle (EV) market in Europe is rapidly evolving, with the latest figures from Counterpoint Research revealing that Tesla has emerged as the best-selling EV brand in Europe, dethroning Mercedes-Benz. Tesla’s success is largely attributed to the production of its e-cars at the Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg, which has played a key role in helping the company achieve this feat.

In Q4 2022, the share of purely electric cars in total European passenger car sales was over 29 percent, up significantly from the previous year. Furthermore, in 2023, sales of e-cars in Europe are expected to surpass the 4 million mark, indicating the growing demand for sustainable transportation options.

Notably, Germany emerged as the largest European market for electric cars, accounting for 38.7 percent of total sales, followed by the UK and France. Additionally, Germany saw the highest year-over-year growth rate of 75% in Q4 2022.

While Tesla dominated the European EV market, other brands like Volkswagen also witnessed a significant rise in sales. Sales of the VW ID family of electric cars rose nearly 48 percent year-over-year in Q4 2022, helping VW maintain its position as the second best-selling electric car brand in Europe.

Chinese Brands Also Competitive

Chinese e-car brands, including BYD, Lynk, NIO, and XPeng, have also witnessed a surge in sales in Europe, with their combined market share expected to more than double to around 5% by the end of 2023.

As the world moves towards sustainable transportation options, the demand for EVs is expected to continue rising. With innovations in battery technology and an increasing number of charging stations, the adoption of EVs is becoming more practical and accessible to consumers. The growing sales figures in Europe demonstrate that the future of transportation is electric, and companies like Tesla and Volkswagen are leading the way towards a more sustainable future.
